Project Description

This event will focus on the sustainability of family farms and how agriculture has developed with regards to industrialization and the financial crisis that it is in today. The speaker supported through this initiative will address the topic of how smaller to mid sized farms have an opportunity to meet the marketplace head on in regards to a local food movement and remain sustainable and viable and be able to compete in the modern day industry.

Project Objectives

To promote holistic management and expand the uptake of this practice across the western Canadian provinces. Holistic management is an approach to managing resources that builds biodiversity, improves production and generates financial strength; it improves quality of life while enhancing the environment that sustains everyone.

Performance Story:

The second Western Canadian Holistic Management Conference was held in Russell, MB with delegates from Ontario and all the western provinces in attendance.

The keynote speaker addressed issues related to sustainable agriculture with an emphasis on the economics of sustainability and the future of small farms in a post-industrial economy. Two-thirds of attendees rated the conference as excellent and more than half expressed the desire to have this become an annual event. The conference proceedings are on the Manitoba Forage Council website.

Holistic Management courses will be taking place in the Pilot Mound area and refresher courses will be offered in the Dauphin area for existing holistic management clubs.
