Project Description
This project represents Phase 1 and 2 of a 4-phase approach directed towards sustainable sow barn conversions. The project will include a comprehensive review of the literature on sow housing options and considerations. Additionally, based on industry consultations via a focus group, a reference document will be prepared for use by pork producers, extension and other stakeholders. As well, engineering design scenarios will be developed for at least two of the most promising options identified through the review process and consultations.
Project Objectives
To provide the hog industry with information regarding gestation stall alternatives for existing barns that are economically feasible, practical and designed for good animal welfare.
