Project Description

Organize and host in partnership with MAFRI, an Aquaculture Workshop to help inform potential producers on the logistics of entering the aquaculture industry and moving towards profitable production.

Project Objectives

To discuss opportunities and risks involved with inland aquaculture as a diversification opportunity for producers; to begin assessing Manitoba's current opportunities and challenges for aquaculture as an agricultural market opportunity in rural Manitoba; to conduct an initial assessment of the specific infrastructure requirements and supports to enhance the aquaculture sector in Manitoba; and to discuss an action plan to move the agenda forward.

Performance Story:

This was the first initiative of its kind in Manitoba. The key recommendations illustrated in the final facilitators' report from the Spawning Aquaculture workshop have been distributed throughout Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives and will be used as a basis for further direction from the Provincial Government. 

In January 2006 a new Manitoba producers association was formed called "Manitoba Aquaculture Producers Association." This group of producers formed as a result of one of the key recommendations emanating from the Spawning Aquaculture workshop. This group will take on a leadership role for the industry and drive the expansion of the industry through the full value chain from production to processing, marketing, quality control, distribution and beyond.
