Producing Vegetables and/or Fruits in a CO2 Enriched Environment
Project Description
A literature review will investigate the types of plants that are conducive to greenhouse production, primarily in the C3 plant families. Trials will be conducted in a controlled environment with half of the greenhouse receiving carbon dioxide enhancement and the other side without enhancement for benchmark comparisons. Species will be selected for initial trials based on the literature review and plant physiology. As the trials advance, decisions for which species continue will be based on previous trial results in conjunction with additional literature review information. A market review for products from species that respond to the environment will be conducted to determine economic and market fit and opportunity and ultimate feasibility of the project. Publication of trial outcomes and future opportunities for the Manitoba economy will be summarized.
Project Objectives
To investigate the feasibility of utilizing the waste stream of carbon dioxide and composted manure in greenhouse production of vegetables and fruits.
