Minimizing Contamination Risks for Cdn Swine Barns Equipped with Air-Filtration Systems
Project Description
The project consists in updating technical, scientific and economic information regarding air filtration of hog barns in Canada and the US. The cost of installation and operating the system in 5 Canadian hog barns recently equipped with the air filtration devices will be measured, documented, analysed and shared for the benefit of producers. Cases of contaminated in air filtered barns in both Canada and the US will be documented, analysed, and compared. Cases occurring during the project will be investigated to identify the causes and avoid repeating the same mistakes. The project will produce building, biosecurity and maintenance standards to maximize air filtration. Two verification check lists will be developed to carry biosecurity and engineering audits to identify improvements to be made at start up and during operation. All results and documents will be shared for the benefit of Canadian hog producers and their technical advisors.
Project Objectives
Investigate the conditions in swine barns equipped with air-filtration systems to identify causes of contamination and best risk-reduction solutions that will minimize the risk of contamination by the PRRS virus and other airborne pathogens
