Project Objectives:
To assist Manitoba Seed Growers' Association members to expand their knowledge and profitability to their pedigreed seed enterprises.
Project Description:
This project will provide a venue for seed growers to convene and discuss topics of common interest across the industry. This year's event will look at a variety of issues including new research, present and future potential, and innovation. This particular project will support a speaker whose presentation will address the role of agriculture in times of climate change, water and food security and human health issues.
Performance Story:
Changes in oil and fresh water supply and consumer/societal demand will converge to create "the perfect storm," according to John Oliver of Flax 2015.
This project supported a presentation by Oliver which looked at the challenges and opportunities this perfect storm will create for the agriculture sector, specifically the seed industry.
The presentation provided awareness to seed industry participants of the challenges they'll be facing in the near future. He suggested that this perfect storm is closer than the seed and plant science industry thinks, but that the industry can rise above it.
The answers he provided to the range of global issues he presented require a great deal of industry partnership.
Participants' feedback indicated that the presentation was thought provoking and well received.
