Project Description

The project is designed to confirm the feasibility of using the variety identification approach developed and patented from the initial phase of this innovative project. This is work that needs to be completed to confirm the proof of technology prior to the significant investment to commercialize this technological approach to variety identification. The anticipated result of this phase of the project is that there will be sufficient confirmed evidence that the approach that has been developed is robust enough to build a business case for the significant investment required to commercialize this exciting approach to variety identification.

Performance Story

This research advances a technical solution to the removal of KVD as a quality assurance tool to allow the grain handling system to readily identify varieties within a sample of grain to ensure the buyers know what varieties are being delivered.

An earlier phase of this project resulted in proof that the aptamer technology developed by NeoVentures Biotechnology Inc. is an effective means of differentiating between AC Barrie and AC Vista wheat varieties. This phase validated that the utilizing aptamer generated florescence to identify varieties of wheat could feasibly be applied commercially.

Work will continue on this project to achieve a satisfactory balance between reliable variety identification and simplicity in product delivery. The CWB is investing an additional $1.3 million to pursue this technology. Once commercialized this technology will affect an even greater number than the 65,000 producers who market their grain through the CWB.
