Project Description

The CHTA national convention is held as an opportunity to promote the crop and industry, network with stakeholders, and share research and developments in the industry. This event, held in Winnipeg, is an opportunity for Manitoba to continue to show leadership for the hemp industry. Manitoba has lead in acres of production of hemp and has the two largest hemp grain processors in Canada. Speakers will be addressing new and emerging issues tied to consumer trends relative to hemp products, advances in variety development, nutritional attributes, the farm food safety program and new hemp uses in industrial materials.

To inform and update members and general public on advancements in the hemp industry in research, production, processing and marketing.

Observations & Conclusions

This project resulted in improved knowledge of potential innovative products, processes and technologies which will help the fledgling Canadian hemp industry to pursue and seize new opportunities.

Delegates that attended the event learned about harvesting and processing technology that allow for commercial volumes of production and preparation of products for both the building market and the horticultural market in Europe, the handling and behaviour of hemp in blending with cement, and about the connection between hemp and diet and health.

The hemp food health connection will continue to be a major driver of the hemp industry in Canada. Fibre processing is a key area of interest for those involved in Canada's young hemp fibre sector. Hemp building construction is a brand new opportunity for Canada that is capturing a lot of interest particularly as a result of the mainstream building efforts underway in the UK using hempcrete.
