Adaptation of Technology for Control of Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee Parasites and Disease
Project Description
This project will identify and evaluate potential control methods for parasites and diseases in Saskatchewan alfalfa leafcutter bee populations and develop strategies through adaptation of current technologies which will assist alfalfa leafcutter beekeeper /alfalfa seed producers in maintaining high quality alfalfa leafcutter bee populations. The first year will involve identification and evaluation of candidate compounds and/or processes at the laboratory level and then test the adapted technologies in field-scale projects involving alfalfa leafcutters and alfalfa seed producers.
Project Objectives
Enhance alfalfa leafcutter bee reproduction and alfalfa seed production in SK and western Canada to increase the value of alfalfa leafcutter bees in hybrid canola seed production, in blueberry production, and in export markets.
